Florists.com takes pride in hiring veterans who embody the qualities of teamwork and service to others, two of Florists.com's founding values.  Since launching in 2013, the company has employed former service members from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines to ensure flowers and gifts are delivered on time.

Two veterans, in fact, remain part of the leadership team.  John Ryan, a former Army officer, runs overall operations while David Lee, a former sailor, directs the website and creative department.  We spotlight them today at the anniversary of the company's first veteran hire.

Additionally, the company supports the work of New York State For Vets (NYS4Vets), which helped place John and David with Florists.com, and Sheer ID, a company that helps supply discounts for returning veterans.

Get to Know John Ryan

The everyday pace of serving customers of Florists.com forces John to rely on his past as a former newspaper reporter and Army combat officer to help him make rapid decisions in the uncertain world of building new businesses.

Before arriving here in late 2012, John wrote for Army Times, a weekly newspaper from the Gannett Corporation, and Newsweek magazine. He has reported hundreds of stories and his work has been published in papers across the country, including USA Today and The Daily Beast.

John found his interest in story-telling while a captain in the U.S. Army serving in the central Iraq town of Iskandariyah.  There in 2005, he led more than 300 ground missions and also, as an intelligence specialist, authored a 160-page manual on enemy warfare.  In 2004, he led U.S. and Iraqi soldiers on combat operations in northwest Iraq.  For his services in Iraq, he was awarded the Bronze Star, one of the nation's highest military awards.

During his five years of active service, John also served as an executive officer, reconnaissance scout and a commander of tank-like Bradley Fighting Vehicles. His Army service officially ended in 2012.  It started in 1999.

John is a 2003 graduate of the United States Military Academy and holds a master’s degree in writing from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in New York City.  He is a proud husband and father of two nice little kids.

 Get to Know David Lee

David Lee applies his dedication to teamwork and fostering a caring culture on a daily basis.

Before joining the Florists.com family, he served as an electrician's mate on board the U.S.S. Wasp (L.H.D-1). During his enlistment, David served two tours, one in the Mediterranean and another in the Middle East, participating in critical missions that deployed many U.S. Marines to areas in Iran and Iraq.  Additionally, he managed multi-million dollar electrical projects aboard an amphibious ship.

After serving his country, he decided to finish his education and come back home to his wife and two beautiful children. He completed his B.S. in Finance from Brooklyn College while operating two of his own e-commerce businesses.  He is also a licensed financial adviser.

At Florists.com, David has helped improve many areas of the organization to propel this emerging company into offering the best quality and value products around.
